Personal Development Curriculum Intent

Through the Personal Development Curriculum, all pupils leave Ark Victoria with a broad and diverse knowledge of moral, social and cultural issues as well as how they can positively contribute to the wider community. Our curriculum enables students to explore and develop their understanding of British Values within a wide range of topics in addition to exploring the importance and impact of current affairs. The Personal Development Curriculum also develops pupil’s ambition and independence, as well as fostering resilience, respect and kindness. This leads to our pupils becoming curious citizens with a strong moral purpose.

Our Personal Development Six Pillars

At Ark Victoria we have 6 curriculum pillars.

Resilient readers: Our school prioritises reading as we understand that pupils need to be effective readers in order to be successful in life; all pupils will be given strategies and support as well as opportunities to read confidently and fluently, to ensure that they are able to securely access the whole curriculum and read at or above chronological reading age. Within personal development, pupils will have the opportunity to read a range of different sources and will have the opportunity to develop their confidence in reading a variety of different text types. Vocabulary is very important, and we ensure pupils understand the appropriate topic related vocabulary through explicit teaching.

High quality teaching: Teachers are passionate about delivering an excellent personal development curriculum which allows our learners to develop their knowledge of core topics within personal development to ensure that they develop their character, including resilience, confidence and independence, so that they can contribute positively to the life of the school, their local community and the wider environment. Our teachers understand what excellence looks like within each phase and work together to ensure the transition from primary to secondary is secure using shared language and approaches, as well as ensuring pupils reach the end goals.

Knowledge rich curriculum: Teachers are passionate about delivering an excellent personal development curriculum which allows our learners to develop their knowledge of core topics within personal development to ensure that they develop their character, including resilience, confidence and independence, so that they can contribute positively to the life of the school, their local community and the wider environment. High ambition: raising aspirations and outcomes:  Teachers’ expectations are high for every child and they ensure that all pupils are able to access the full curriculum. Pupils understand the importance of the personal development curriculum as it contributes to the development of their character, including resilience, confidence and independence, so that they can contribute positively to the life of the school, their local community and the wider environment.

Diverse and inclusive: our curriculum is consciously inclusive and seeks to support pupils of all backgrounds, experiences, and protected characteristics to access and enjoy our aspirational curricula. We recognise the importance of developing and valuing our learners’ voice; our focus on oracy helps develop confidence, the ability to express views, to debate and build on the contributions of others. Within our personal development lessons, ‘talk partners’ or ‘think, pair, share’ is used throughout each lesson to give pupils the opportunities to practice oracy and we explicitly teach pupils how to appropriately respond to each other while building a strong culture of error.

Strong Character and enrichment: our curricula build pupils’ understanding of themselves as learners, as well as understanding the importance of values and virtues in helping to live a fulfilled and happy life. We provide students with a range of opportunities within the classroom and beyond to develop their character including charity work, volunteering, extra-curricular clubs, trips and drop down days. Strong character is also developed through our use of student voice and the school council.
