Summer 1

Programming

This half term, pupils will study the fundamental skills of Computer science such as computational thinking

abstraction, decomposition and algorithmic thinking. Pupils will also be designing, creating, refining algorithms. All the above are essential in preparing pupils for Paper 2: Computational thinking, algorithms and programming.

How parents can get involved:

  • Purchase Computer Science CGP revision and exam guides (OCR Exam board)
  • Ensure a revision timetable is created and followed

Ask your child:

  • What is meant by the term abstraction?
  • What is meant by the term decomposition?
  • What methods are used to create algorithms?

Programming

This half term students will be studying 1.1.2-1.2.2 of the Computer Science curriculum titled 'Computer Hardware.' The following topics covered throughout the term are:

  • Architecture of the CPU
  • CPU performance
  • Embedded Systems
  • Primary memory and secondary storage

All the above are essential in preparing pupils for Paper 1: Computer Systems.

How parents can get involved:

  • Purchase Computer Science CGP revision and exam guides (OCR Exam board)
  • Ensure a revision timetable is created and followed

Ask your child:

  • What are the main components of a computer system?
  • What types of memory exist within a computer?
  • Where can you find embedded systems?

Autumn 2

Programming

This unit has a big focus on Programming fundamentals. Pupils will investigate the basic constructs of programming as well as sequence, selection and iteration. Pupils will also look at the importance of assigning data types, sting manipulation and applying concatenation when using a high-level programming language such as Python.

How parents can get involved:

  • Purchase Computer Science CGP revision and exam guides (OCR Exam board)
  • Ensure a revision timetable is created and followed

Autumn 1

Data representation

Pupils are learning about Data representation and how computers deal with binary in different ways. In this unit pupils will learn binary theory, binary logic, binary to denary conversions (Vice versa) and hexadecimals. In combination with this, pupils will also learn the different types of compression, this includes both lossy and lossless compression and how they are implemented in various media formats.

How parents can get involved:

  • Purchase Computer Science CGP revision and exam guides (OCR Exam board)
  • Ensure a revision
