Year 10 Physical Education
Summer 1
Pupils will complete 3 units across the course. This term, the focus will be on:
(01) Applied Anatomy and Physiology
(03) Practical Activity assessment
There will be a full mock exam held within the Summer Assessment series. This will be on all aspects of unit (O1).
This term lessons will focus on:
- Respiratory system: structure and function.
- Aerobic and Anaerobic exercise
- Short-term effects of exercise
- Optimising training
- Preventing injury
How parents can get involved:
- Encourage your children to attend sporting inter school competitions.
- Encourage your children to get involved in physical activity outside of school.
- Watch Sports performances with them such as a Handball match or a Badminton match and talk to them about what they are seeing.
- Think about if they can identify any strengths or weaknesses and what skills they are seeing the performance of the team and individuals.
- Talk to them about what they are learning in lessons, ask them questions and see what kind of responses they are giving you.
- Practise exam questions with them.
Spring 2
Pupils will currently study 2 units out of the 4 required to complete the course:
- RO51 Contemporary issues in Sport
- RO52 Developing Sports Skills
In the unit R051 Contemporary issues in Sport, students will study the remainder of L02: the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport, initiatives in sport. They will then start L03: Understand the importance of Hosting major sporting events. This topic will cover the features of major sporting events, benefits and drawbacks to hosting events and the links these might have to potential sporting legacy. This will be covered in 1 lesson per week a topic test for L02 will occur once the content has been covered. LO3 topic test will occur in Summer 1 term and the final assessment for the whole unit will occur in Jan 2023.
In the unit R052 Developing sports skills, students will be working on completing L03: Be able to officiate in a Sporting Activity. This will focus on Table Tennis officiating, including scoring, faults, and hand signals. This will be formally assessed at the end of this term. Learning Objective 4: Be able to apply practice methods to support improvement in a sporting activity will also be started. Students will be expected to identify areas of improvement in their own performance, types of skill and types of practice. This is a written piece of coursework that will be completed under controlled assessment conditions. Final assessment of this piece of work will be completed in Jan 2023.

Spring 1

- RO52 Developing Sports Skills (2 lessons per week, practical)
In the unit R051 Contemporary issues in sport. Focus this term will be on completing Learning Objective 2: Know about the role of sport in promoting values. Moving onto Learning Objective 3: Understanding the importance of hosting major sporting events.
In R052 students will focus on Learning Objective 3: Table Tennis Officiating. They will learn the different hand signals and practice them in action by scoring and officiating games.
Autumn 2
Pupils will study 2 units:
- RO51 Contemporary issues in sport (1 lesson per week, theory)
- RO52 Developing Sports Skills (2 lessons per week, practical)
In the unit R051 Contemporary issues in sport students will look at exploring participation levels and barriers to sport, the promotion of values and ethical behaviour of sport, the role of high- profile sporting events and national governing bodies in advancing sports attempts to positively impact upon society beyond providing entertainment. This unit will continue until June where the students will sit their external examination in 2022. The unit is worth 25% of the final grade. Focus this term will be on Learning Objective 2: Know about the role of sport in promoting values.
In R052 students will develop their skills, techniques and use of strategies/tactics/compositional ideas in both a team and an individual sport, as well as their understanding of the rules to allow them to act in officiating roles within an activity. These aspects are all practically assessed. There is one final part that involves written coursework component, they will consider the use of practice methods to improve their performance. This unit will again continue until June 2022 when the students will have their work externally assessed by the exam board OCR. Pupils will focus on Learning Objective 1: Be able to use skills, techniques and tactics/strategies as an individual performer in Badminton.
Autumn 1
