Sports Studies (Spring 2)

The students have one final unit of their course to
complete:

RO52 Developing Sports Skills: In the unit R052 Developing sports skills, students will be working on completing L02: Be able to use skills, techniques and tactics/strategies/compositional ideas as a team. This will focus on Handball, Netball and Cricket. This will be formally assessed at the end of this term and delivered in 2 lessons per week. Learning Objective 4: Be able to apply practice methods to support improvement in a sporting activity will also be completed. Students will be expected to discuss types of practice, methods to improve their own performance and how to measure improvement in skills. This is a written piece of coursework that will be completed under controlled
assessment conditions.

RO51 Contemporary issues in Sport – for the students who missed the examination in January, they will sit the examination in May 2022.

How parents can get involved:

  • Encourage students to attend any interventions
  • Ensure students do not miss any lessons
  • Watch and discuss team sports together. What are the performers doing as individuals and as a team, what skills are they are using, what are their strengths and weaknesses? How do you think they could improve their performance?
  • For those that missed the examination in January please encourage them to continuously revise and complete exam questions. It is very important that they do not

In R052 students will develop their skills, techniques and use of strategies/tactics/compositional ideas in both a team and an individual sport, as well as their understanding of the rules to allow them to act in officiating roles within an activity. These aspects are all practically assessed. There is one final part that involves written coursework component, they will consider the use of practice methods to improve their performance. This unit will again continue until June 2022 when the students will have their work externally assessed by the exam board OCR.

Focus this term:

  • Learning Objective 1: Developing Individual sports skills in Badminton (1 lesson) Decision making during performance
  • Learning Objective 3: Table Tennis Officiating (1 lesson) Hand signals and scoring
  • Learning Objective 4: Applying Practice Methods to support improvements in sport (1 lesson). Specifically, Types of skill and practice

Sports Studies (Autumn 2)

Pupils will study 2 units:

  • RO51 Contemporary issues in sport (1 lesson per week, theory)
  • R051 Examination (external OCR) 10th January 2022
  • RO52 Developing Sports Skills (2 lessons per week, practical)

In the unit R051 Contemporary issues in sport, students will look at exploring participation levels and barriers to sport, the promotion of values and ethical behaviour of sport, the role of high-profile sporting events and national governing bodies in advancing sport’s attempts to positively impact upon society beyond providing entertainment. This unit will continue until June when the students will sit their external examination in 2022. The unit is worth 25% of the final grade. In R052 students will develop their skills, techniques and use of strategies/tactics/compositional ideas in both a team and an individual sport, as well as their understanding of the rules to allow them to act in officiating roles within an activity. These aspects are all practically assessed. There is one final part that involves written coursework component; they will consider the use of practice methods to improve their performance. This unit will again continue until June 2022 when the students will have their work externally assessed by the exam board OCR.
