Spring 2

Loci Constructions

Pupils will be focusing on the unit of loci constructions during this half term. They will be drawing and constructing triangles using compasses and protractors. They will be looking at how to draw perpendicular bisectors using compasses. Pupils will be solving loci problems using various real-life contexts.

Pupils will also be exploring and using Pythagoras’ Theorem this half term. They will then be using the theorem to find the hypotenuse and other sides of a right-angled triangles.

How parents can get involved:

  • Make sure that students have all the correct mathematical equipment such as compasses and protractors
  • Remind pupils to read over their Autumn work
  • Complete homework on Hegarty maths
  • Use the building blocks on Hegarty Maths, if they are struggling with their homework
  • Use websites such as Maths Genie to do further exam question practice

Spring 1

Graphical Representations

In this unit, pupils will be exploring graphical representations; this has been broken down into transforming 2D figures and Linear graphs. This will include:

  • Equation of a line
  • Gradients
  • Y intercepts
  • Plotting coordinates
  • Enlargement
  • Reflections
  • Rotations
  • Translations

How parents can get involved:

  • Support pupils in using Hegarty maths, create a timetable where certain times are dedicated to maths. Squared/graph paper for them to practice on.

Autumn 2

Fundamental Skills

This term, pupils will study equations, inequalities and graphical representations in Mathematics. We will be identifying the gaps in pupils' skills and then addressing any misconceptions and building these essential mathematical skills. Pupils will need to have a clear and consistent approach to these methods and skills. They will be using all these skills throughout Key Stage 3 and 4, so it is vital that pupils develop fluency.

This topic will consist of:

  • Sequences
  • Forming and solving equations
  • Forming and solving inequalities
  • Linear graphs
  • Accuracy and estimation

How parents can get involved:

  • Give opportunities for pupils to build confidence without their calculators and phones
  • Develop and build confidence on mental methods
  • Use Hegarty maths to access building blocks to fill gaps in prior knowledge

Autumn 1

Algebraic Skills

This term, pupils will study Algebraic expressions and equations in Mathematics.  Pupils will need to have a clear and consistent approach to these methods and skills. They will need to become confident with these skills to help prepare them for Key Stage 4.

This topic will consist of:

  • Recapping basic algebra skills
  • Solving equations
  • Collecting like terms
  • Forming and solving equations

 How parents can get involved:

  • Give pupils time to go over classwork at home
  • Remind pupils to watch videos and answers questions on the Hegarty Maths website.
