Independent Learning

Principles

  • Doing your homework regularly can boost your learning by months — short, focused tasks make a big difference when you keep up with them.
  • Students who spend about an hour a day on homework see the strongest improvement, especially when they work independently and stay consistent.

Independent Study Expectations

  1. Pupils should complete Sparx Reading Practice weekly
  2. Pupils should complete their Core Knowledge quizzes using Carousel
  3.  Pupils must complete their Sparx Maths and Sparx Science homework weekly.

Core and Foundational Knowledge

Core Knowledge Organisers

At Ark Victoria, your teachers have made a Core Knowledge Organiser to help you learn. It includes the most important facts and ideas you need for each subject and matches what you learn in class, so nothing feels confusing.

It shows you the key information to remember for your lessons and assessments. You can find each term’s organiser at the bottom of the page.

Consolidate Foundational Knowledge

We use online platforms like Carousel and Sparx to help you to understand and remember the core knowledge needed to be successful in each subject.

Independent Learning at Key Stage 3

Pupils should spend 30 minutes on each of their Carousel subjects before the quiz deadlines.  They are aiming for 85% score completion for each subject to secure the core knowledge. We would recommend at least 30 minutes per subject each week to maintain this.

Inclusion Strategy:

At Ark Victoria, we want every student to learn in the way that helps them make the most progress. After NGRT assessments, some students are given a more personalised set of lessons and an independent study programme to support their learning. These platforms have been selected for their accessibility, adaptability, and proven impact. This approach ensures that all students continue to build independence and make meaningful progress beyond the classroom.

Spellings and Literacy Support

In 2026, spelling remains a vital "building block" for your child’s education. When a child can spell easily, they don't have to stop and think about every letter—this allows them to focus all their energy on being creative and sharing great ideas.

Why Spelling is Important

  • Better Reading: Understanding how words are built helps children recognize them faster when reading.
  • Confidence: Children who feel good about their spelling are much more likely to enjoy writing.
  • Clear Communication: It ensures their ideas are easy for others to read and understand.

How This Section Helps

This section focuses on spelling methods rather than just memorizing lists. We want to give pupils "tools" they can use for any word. We encourage parents to work with pupils to practice these methods to support spelling fundamentals.
