Why do we learn art?
Art and Design Intent
Art and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. At Ark Victoria Academy our high-quality art and design education engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design. As pupils progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. Art and design creates space for personal investigation; one of the few subjects where students can explore their passions through an independent journey of themes and processes. This produces engaged learners that create purposeful work and leaves them feeling empowered by their own abilities, knowledge and practice. Pupils will also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Aims of Our Art and Design Curriculum:
The Ark Victoria Academy Art and Design curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
-
become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
-
evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
-
know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Our cohesive and thoughtfully sequenced curriculum supports pupils to become secure in the building blocks of the Art and Design curriculum – namely through;
-
practical knowledge (of how to create art by learning the methods and techniques used by artists, craft-makers, and designers),
-
theoretical knowledge (the tools, materials, and history of the subject) and
-
disciplinary knowledge of art (such as the ways in which it is judged, valued, and evaluated), so that pupils can achieve these aims and flourish in their learning of Art and Design.
