Why do we learn religious education?
Religious Education Curriculum Intent
At Ark Victoria Academy, our religious education (RE) curriculum makes a significant contribution to pupils’ academic and personal development. It plays a key role in promoting social cohesion and the virtues of respect and empathy, which are important in our diverse society.
RE provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human. It develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of principal religions, other religious traditions and non-religious worldviews that offer answers to questions such as these.
RE offers opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development, deepening the understanding of the significance of religion in the lives of others – individually, communally and cross-culturally.
Exploring the concepts of religion and belief and their roles in the spiritual, moral and cultural lives of people in a diverse society helps individuals develop moral awareness and social understanding.
RE plays an important role in preparing pupils for adult life, employment and lifelong learning. It helps children and young people become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.
Aims of Our RE Curriculum
The Ark Victoria Academy RE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
develop respect for others, including people with different faiths and beliefs
-
are equipped with the knowledge to respond to challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs, the self, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human
-
are encouraged to explore their own beliefs (whether they are religious or non-religious), in the light of what they learn, as they examine issues of religious belief and faith and how these impact on personal, institutional and social ethics
-
are enabled to build their sense of identify and belonging, which helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society
-
consider their responsibilities to themselves and to others and to explore how they might contribute to their communities and to wider society.
