Why Do We Learn Religious Education?

Religious Education Curriculum Intent

At Ark Victoria Academy, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the concept of religion and the world’s religious and non-religious traditions.

Aims of Our RE Curriculum

The Ark Victoria Academy RE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop substantive knowledge about specific religious and non-religious traditions, including the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), the Dharmic faiths (Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism) and non-religious worldviews (Humanism)
  • develop conceptual understanding, for example, knowledge of the concept of incarnation in Christianity and reincarnation in Hinduism
  • develop an appreciation of the complexity and diversity of religion
  • develop disciplinary knowledge, namely the methods and ‘ways of knowing’ associated with the disciplines of theology, human and social sciences and philosophy
  • develop an understanding of their own relationship to the subject matter, increasing their self-awareness of the assumptions they bring when they think about religion
